Basil is a culinary herb cultivated many regions throughout the world with numerous health advantages. It also called as a "King of Herbs" and "Royal herbs". The scientific name of Basil is Ocimum basilicum. It belongs to the genus Lamiaceae family. It is believed that this herb is native to India and other tropical regions of Asia and it have been cultivated from more than 5,000 years, but now it is also cultivated widely in other tropical countries like Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia and South Africa, etc. 

Due to various types of Vitamin, Minerals and nutrients, presence in the Basil, it has lots of health benefits. Basil contains lots of antioxidant compound, so it protects us from infections, colds, coughs and other viral infection.

Some of the vitamins that Basil has vitamin K, vitamin E, vitamin A, vitamin C, folate, niacin, pyridoxine, riboflavin, thiamin and pantothenic acid. Basil also contains dietary fiber, sodium and potassium, which have lots of health advantages. Apart from this Basil also contains minerals such as copper, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and iron. Basil also contains some phyto-nutrients such as beta carotene, beta-crypto-xanthin and lutein-zeaxanthin.
